The Story Behind
Reese Ward Foundation

Cameron “Reese” Ward grew up in Cary, North Carolina—rooted in the community that shaped him and that he, in turn, would one day profoundly impact. He attended Cary Christian School, later graduated from NC State University, and spent his youth on fields and courts across the Triangle, playing football and basketball and forming friendships that would last a lifetime. Those who knew him remember a man who was warm, loyal, competitive, funny, and deeply devoted to the people around him.

Reese also carried a legacy deeper than many realized. He came from a three‑generation Raleigh building family, following the path forged by his grandfather, father, uncles, and cousins. To the Wards, building wasn’t just a profession—it was a way of strengthening communities and caring for others. Reese embraced that calling wholeheartedly, opening his own Cary‑based building business and pouring his heart into creating spaces for families to live, grow, and make memories.

Life was unfolding exactly as he had hoped—newly married, thriving in his career, surrounded by lifelong friends, and dreaming of the future ahead.

Then everything changed.

Only five days before Christmas, after simply “feeling bad one day,” Reese received the unimaginable: a diagnosis of Stage 4 cancer and an 18‑month prognosis. At 6’4”, strong, vibrant, and only 30 years old, he seemed like the last person who could be sick. The news shocked everyone who loved him. In an instant, the life he was building was shaken to its core.

What followed, however, revealed the depth of who Reese truly was.

Over the next two years, Reese fought with extraordinary courage. He underwent clinical trials at Duke, faced every treatment available, and refused to let fear or despair define his days. His spirit remained unbreakable, even as the disease advanced silently. But while his will stayed strong, his body could not keep pace. Four days after Christmas, twenty‑four months after his diagnosis, Reese passed away—leaving behind family and friends whose hearts were shattered, yet determined to honor the man he was.

From that grief, The Reese Ward Foundation was born.

The Foundation was created by those who loved Reese most, driven by the lessons learned through his journey:

  • Research is essential. Every trial, whether successful or not, pushes science forward and gives future patients a fighting chance.
  • The patient journey is overwhelming. Families face impossible challenges—transportation needs, lodging, scheduling, insurance, and emotional strain—often with little support and no roadmap.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple and urgent: to support cancer research and ensure that no patient or family faces this journey alone.

Our Priority

Reese lived his life believing in building things that mattered. Now, through this Foundation, we carry that belief forward.

As his family says:

“Reese believed in building a future worth fighting for. Every act of support helps build that future—for patients and families who need hope right now.”
